Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

It is important that we, as teachers, do not focus on defining success as 'completing' the lesson. Instead, we should be clearly articulating the purpose of the lesson and what aspects are the imperative 'essential learning'. Of course, there is always going to be incidental learning that is formed as a by-product of rich, in-depth tasks. However, it is important not to let these cloud what constitutes the initial success criteria of the lesson. Success is not defined as completing a task, but having a deep understanding of the topic. Lastly, if students have attained mastery of a task we must ensure that there is a purposeful progression of learning to keep those students engaged.
